Michael
is a native Western Pennsylvanian. He grew up in the Johnstown area
(Windber), lived in Erie for 5 years, and now has been in Pittsburgh
for 16 years. In his early teens, Michael felt that God was calling
him to pursue a career in fulltime church music ministry. He has
served churches in Johnstown (PA), Erie (PA), and for 16 years at
Beulah Presbyterian in Pittsburgh (PA), until joining the ministry
of Oakmont Presbyterian on June 1, 2010 as Director of Music
Ministries and Organist. Michael’s appreciation for church music
spans a variety of musical styles from the Classics to gospel and
contemporary Christian.
Michael has a heart for worship. Whether it is in the planning for,
or the leading of, the Worship of God is what is at the center.
Helping people engage their whole being in worship is important.
Encouraging the people’s song is of high importance. “I try
to make the text come alive through the accompaniment – the style,
registration, and tempo. I want to play in such a way that will
convey the message of the text and that will encourage the
congregation to participate and engage in worship. I want it to be
so exciting that they can’t help but join in!” The hymns need to be
an experience, not just something we do in worship!
Michael has a passion to help people discover and develop the gifts
that God has placed within each person. He especially enjoys the
opportunities to help folks find “their voice” and then to
help develop that voice, as it gives an expression of their faith
and their offering of praise to God.
In his spare time, Michael enjoys listening to choral and organ
music (surprise!), as well as jazz and the classics. He loves to
spend time with friends and share a fine dinner together. He has a
weakness for anything chocolate and a fixation with the Weather
Channel. His perfect idea of a vacation is a trip to the beach and
he even enjoys a good storm now and then!
