Fall Film
Discussion Series brochure
2010 Fall Christian Education brochure
Movie theatres are modern day techno-pulpits; people flock to their
local multiplex to let directors and screenwriters influence how
they feel, think and act. As image-bearers of God (the master
storyteller, whose story spans all of creation) we in turn have a
yearning to both create and be entertained by stories. This is
evident even within scripture as Jesus teaches in parables.
Holistic lessons are often learned more effectively through
narrative than with bullet-point outlines and graphs.
Christians should enjoy and engage film not just as entertainment,
but also with a honed philosophical lens to engage culture, and
reflect on how it relates to the gospel. Everyone is invited
to the OPC Film Discussion Series to view a variety of films, each
in its entirety, on a big screen with great sound, followed by
exposition and discussion of the film's cinematic and philosophical
elements, facilitated by our own filmmaker and theologian Bob Ruefle.

Come on in to the
Friendship Hall for film, fun and fascinating discussion.

When his brother is
killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take
his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he
learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions
of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the
precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In
exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers
intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho
Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the
Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. While Jake begins
to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the
beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his
ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand
- and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

The film tells the
inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the

Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially
and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can
bring his people together through the universal language of sport,
Mandela rallies South Africa's rugby team as they make their
historic run to the 1995 Rugby World Cup Championship match.

and beer pong, and everyone loves him. Then, an old childhood
friend, whom Jake used to be friends with, commits suicide. Jake

friend's life. A youth minister tells him that Jake needs God. So

When a plane crashes,
Newspaper columnist Peyton MacGruder discovers a Note that was meant
for the child of one of the passengers. "The Note" shows how
dramatically life can change in a spilt second...the need to make a
connection and reach out to someone you care about. If only we had a
chance for those final goodbyes, to offer words of reconciliation,
to say I love you or share regret. Who would you write to if you had
only a few moments? What would you say?

Jonathan Trager
and Sara Thomas met while shopping for gloves in New York. Though
buying for their respective lovers, the magic was right and a night
of Christmas shopping turned into romance. Jon wanted to explore
things further but Sara wasn't sure their love was meant to be. They
decided to test fate by splitting up and seeing if destiny brought
them back together... Many years later, having lost each other that
night, both are engaged to be married. Still, neither can shake the
need to give fate one last chance to reunite them. Jon enlists the
help of his best man to track down the girl he can't forget starting
at the store where they met. Sara asks her new age musician fiance
for a break before the wedding and, with her best friend in tow,
flies from California to New York hoping destiny will bring her
soulmate back. Near-misses and classic Shakespearean confusion bring
the two close to meeting a number of times but fate will have the
final word on whether it was meant to be.
