Adult Education

2011-12 Christian Education Brochure

2012 Spring Film Series brochure

This year in Adult Education we are pleased to offer a spectacular line-up of visiting lecturers, seminars, Bible studies, and small group discussion each Sunday morning at 9:30 in the Friendship Hall and Adult Education Room.

Drumming for Peace, January 15

Jim Donovan will be our speaker/motivator for Sunday School (for all ages - children, adolescents and adults) on Jan. 15th.  He is the former drummer of the internationally acclaimed band Rusted Root, and is a facilitator for drum circles.   He is able to communicate ways to listen, work together and offer peace through drumming.  So, on the eve of Martin Luther King’s (remember his sermon "Drum Major for Peace"?) birthday we will have Jim here at OPC leading us in peaceful drumming.  This will be intergenerational and held in Friendship Hall.  All will be participating, including the little ones.  He offers a message on a couple of levels, so while the kids enjoy drumming or hitting boomwackers, he will be talking to adults as well.  Jim has been here before, and is very inspiring.  Spread the word and bring a friend!  Drum On!!!!

God's Story, Your Story ~

 September 25 - November 20

Friendship Hall

Carpools and car crashes, job switches and joint custody, moves and motionlessness.  Is there a cohesive storyline to the chaos, confusion, and clutter of your daily life?  According to well-loved author Max Lucado, the answer is a resounding yes!  So what is the text of your life?  With his unequaled warmth and honesty, Lucado plumbs the depths of your storyline and comes up smiling.  "Your story indwells God's," writes Lucado.  "This is the great promise of the Bible and the hope of this book...Above and around us God directs a grander saga, written by his hand, orchestrated by his will, unveiled according to his calendar.  And you are a part of it."

Join Max for an unforgettable journey woven with New Testament stories and contemporary examples of God's beautiful story-making skills.  The beginning of the narrative is legendary, the middle unfolds with surprises still in store, and the ending of your final earthly chapter ushers in a reunion that almost defies description.  It's time to see what your life looks like when God's story becomes your story.

Advent Conspiracy ~

 November 27 - December 18

Friendship Hall

The story of Christ's birth is a story of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love.

So, what happened?  What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists.

And when it's all over, many of us are left with presents to return, looming debt that will take months to pay off, and this empty feeling of missed purpose.  Is this what we really want out of Christmas?

What if Christmas became a world-changing event again?

Welcome to Advent Conspiracy.

Abounding in God's Love ~

 January 8 - 29

Friendship Hall

"God is love" is one of the most basic and profound statements about who God is, and yet do we really know it, have we tasted it, and are our lives filled with it to the point of spilling over?

Two-thousand-years ago the Apostle Paul prayed that our love might abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.  And that we would be rooted and established in love, having power, together with all the Lord's people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge - that we may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.  Now that is a prayer and a vision of life worth exploring and living!!!

Ron Tappy ~

 February 5 - 12

Friendship Hall

Dr. Ron Tappy is the G. Albert Shoemaker Professor of Bible and Archaeology at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.  He also serves as director of the James L. Kelso Bible Lands Museum and as the project director and principal investigator of the Zeitah Excavations, an archaeological field project at Tel Zayit, Israel.  His teaching focuses on the life and literature of the Old Testament period, Biblical Archaeology, and the history of Israel, and his teaching method examines ways in which the broader cultural context of biblical Israel shaped both the world of the biblical writers and, by extension, their theological outlook.

The Christian Atheist ~

 February 19 - March 25

Friendship Hall

The Christian Atheist, by recovering Christian Atheist Craig Groeschel, is an honest, hard-hitting and eye-opening look into the ways people believe in God but live as if he doesn't exist.  From his own lapses in faith as a young man to the painful self-admission he had to make as an established pastor, Groeschel's own journey will immerse you and challenge you into a deeper, Christ-filled life.  "The more I looked, the more I found Christian Atheists everywhere" says Groeschel...and after a decade of successful ministry he had to make a painful self-admission: although he believed in God, he was leading his church like God didn't exist.  To Christians and non-Christians alike, to the churched and the unchurched, the journey leading up to Groeschel's admission and the journey that follows - from his family and his upbringing to the lackluster and even diametrically opposed expressions of faith he encountered - will look and sound like the story of their own lives.  Now the founding and senior pastor of the multicampus, pace-setting LiveChurch.tv, Groeschel's personal journey toward a more authentic, God-honoring life is more relevant than ever.

Christians and Christian Atheists everywhere will be nodding their heads as they are challenged to take their own honest moment and ask the question, "Am I putting my whole faith in God but still living as if everything is up to me?"

Betty Angelini ~

 April 1

Friendship Hall

Romans 8 - Inseparable ~

 April 15 - May 20

Friendship Hall

Where do we find hope, strength and comfort?  Through faith in Jesus we can be connected to the heart of the Father with inseparable love.  Romans, chapter eight, contains a message of hope-filled optimism.  We are loved children and our Father will never let go of us.  Nothing can separate us from the love of God...nothing.

Weekly Bible Studies

Women's Bible Study meets on Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm in the Lona McCrae Room.  If you have questions, please contact Jane Kinter (jkinter@oakmontpresby.org, 412.828.5770).  If you are interested in participating, please let Jane know so a book can be ordered for you. (Or just show up Thursday night at 6:30!)

Men's Bible Study meets on Saturday morning at 8:00 am at various local restaurants.  If you have questions about this group please contact Eric Walker (412.953.0249, ewalker@alcco.com).

The Bible from Scratch: The Old Testament, beginning February 1 at noon, in the Adult Education Room.  Do you have memories of your Sunday school teacher expecting you to memorize all of the books of the Bible in order?  Can you recite them still?  Have you been in conversation with someone who quotes so many Bible verses that you feel intimidated and embarrassed about how little you know about the Bible?  Were you ever in a Bible study group when the leader instructed the class members to look up a Bible passage and you weren’t quite sure where to look?  Have you been invited by someone to attend a Bible study group but thought of many reasons not to go because you were sure you would feel out of place?  If you have answered one or more of these questions in the affirmative come and see what happens when we start from scratch and get a sense of the sweep of the Old Testament, its characters, their stories, and God’s story.  Join the adventure for either part or all of the series, but know that you are always welcome.  For more information contact Brad Walters, bwalters@oakmontpresby.org.

Weekday Bible Studies

Each week two weekday Bible studies meet at OPC.  Guided lessons and supplemental readings provide access to learners of all stages of Biblical familiarity, and the weekly discussion format is equally suitable for participants attending on a regular basis or simply as able, and new members are always welcome!  The Food for the Journey Bible Study meets Wednesdays at noon in the Adult Education Room.  The Sleepers Awake Bible Study meets Wednesday mornings at 6:30 am in the Adult Education Room.  Come join us for either of these compelling studies and enjoy the blessings of growing and sharing in the life of faith seeking understanding.

For more information about either of the above studies please contact Brad Walters (412.828.5770, bwalters@oakmontpresby.org).
